Bunginderry Artists Camp held a Photography workshop with Danielle Lancaster during May 2011.
Danielle offered a range of theory and practical tutorials during this four day retreat which was designed to encompass a wide range of photographic skills and to inspire you to take your creative image making to new levels while exploring the unique Channel Country.
Day 1
With frost on the lawn, Day 1 greets us with much anticipation of the day ahead. We have gone back to basics… for some it’s revision and others (like me) it’s completely new and overwhelming. Words like aperture, white balance, fast, slow, freeze and blurr…just to name a few… Danielle Lancaster eases the beginners into the new exciting world of photography and challenges the more experienced to push a little further.
There is a pink cap challenge each day… a challenge set by a member of the group for the others. I am the challenger today, so I donned the pink hat and threw channel as the theme word. Could be channel, channels, channelling or channelled… whatever the take, the task is to find an image by tomorrow morning on that theme. I am to judge, so I wait with anticipation of the absolute delight, when in the morning I find how each and every member of our group has a very different images captured by lens. I’ve warned them I’m a hard marker, but secretly I bet the hard task will be to choose a winner. Sit tight to see the winner in tomorrow’s blog.
Day 2

I’m sure you’ll agree this image taken by Mardi Remond is incredible. Taken whilst Danielle Lancaster was providing the fireworks entertainment out on the open red flat here at Bunginderry. Congratulations Mardi! Mardi now becomes the challenger and has presented us with Rustic as our new theme. Can’t wait to see how everyone captures one theme differently. Watch this space to see the winner. It’s sure to be another cracker. Having fun… wish you were here!
Day 3

Bill Carroll was the winner of yesterday’s pink hat challenge with his take on the theme Rustic. He has set the new challenge of Apertures. This one should bring out some interesting images.
Day 4
Today all the hard work is beginning to pay off. The furrowed brows have lifted as we have now learnt how to tie in all we have learnt with meter reading and exposure. We are now skipping off to play… thrilled with the revelation of knowing what to do with all these beeps, buttons & dials. Smiles all round!
Apertures was the theme of yesterday’s pink hat challenge. Katrina Patterson was the winner with this incredible pic of many apertures. Well done Katrina. I am busting to get out there and shoot for the next challenge…
Day 5
Well it was a wonderful treat to have a few willing models on hand for our portrait session today. We were able to utilise all we have learnt about the capabilities of our camera, reading light and composition to capture the essence of the bush kids.
This image by Megan McNicholl not only won the pink hat challenge for the day for the topic Life , but was also awarded the best image of the photography retreat. Megan was a Blue Dog Photography complete beginner four days ago and I’m sure you’ll agree with me this image is magic! A huge thanks to Danielle Lancaster of Blue Dog Photography for her all her time, patience and attention to detail she offers each and every photographer.
So now all the lens caps are back on, the bags are packed and the photographers now have the task of travelling the many miles home. I am insanely jealous of the time they shall have to think over and consolidate all they have learnt over the past four days. I hope Bunginderry Artist Camp and it’s glorious Channel Country landscapes will be etched in their memories forever, they certainly are in mine.
Here’s a souvenir wildlife photograph of Blue Dog’s Danielle Lancaster with “Bill” the bearded dragon. Bunginderry Artist Camp has just secured the dates for another photography retreat and course with Danielle leading the way as tutor from 18-21 May 2012.
Registrations are now open, so it’s smiles all around!
Happy shutter bugging!
