Breathing, dreaming of water by Meri Peach

Meredith (Meri) Peach has had professional careers in both art and biology, and her biological background informs much of her artwork. Originally an illustrator, she later switched to biological research, then resumed working as an artist in 2002.

Meri now produces functional and sculptural baskets, paintings on canvas, mixed media artworks and digital illustrations. Since 2004 Meri has worked almost full-time as an artist, with a sideline in biological education and consulting. She has taught workshops in basketry since 2005.

Basketry/fibre art, using natural plant materials and synthetic/recycled materials, currently comprises about half of Meri's artwork. She is inspired by natural structures such as cocoons, spiderwebs, shells, burrows, plankton and micro-organisms. Her recent basketry work and paintings speak of various ecological concepts, the impacts of humans on the natural world, and human relationships with the environment.

Teaching Experience

Castaway by Meri Peach Meri has many years of teaching experience with both adults and children, having worked as an educator at the University of Sydney, the University of Technology (Sydney), W.E.A., Taronga Zoo, Manly Oceanworld and Sydney Olympic Park. She has taught basketry workshops since 2005. She regularly teaches the techniques of random weaving, coiling, twining and construction, using natural plant materials and recycled materials such as plastic bags.

Teaching Style

Meri's workshops usually start with a short introduction to the world of basketry, looking at different styles and techniques. Then there is an introduction to the materials and how to prepare them. Meri demonstrates and explains each technique, then guides students through making a basket with step-by-step instructions and individual guidance.

Once the basic technique is mastered, a satisfying and relaxing time follows, while students work on their baskets and improve their skills. Throughout each workshop there is discussion of the history and culture of basketry, and its place in contemporary society. One-day workshops allow students to master a basic technique, while longer workshops enable students to explore their individual creativity and push the boundaries of techniques.
