Myléne Hillam (pronounced Millane) is a mixed media artist living in Queensland. She is a sought after designer and teacher who travels the country demonstrating and teaching a variety of art and crafting media at retail and trade shows. She also teaches a broad range of workshops which include an introduction to resin bangle making, jewellery making and mixed media art. Her work is regularly featured in jewellery and general craft magazines throughout Australia and the US.
Myléne’s skills have been gained through experimentation and play, pushing the boundaries of materials, exploiting their potential and discovering their limitations, but always looking to find new and interesting ways of combining them. She quotes “There is no right way to use a material… these are only the ways the material has been used in the past. I experiment and explore possibilities … it’s how we discover new techniques.” With that philosophy in mind, Myléne incorporates a variety of different media into her jewellery pieces giving her work an original, unique flavour.
Myléne has a successful online boutique from which she sells many of her jewellery pieces. Her range features both simple and more complex designs and her buyers hail from around the globe. The motivation behind her jewellery design is to create functional pieces of wearable art that the wearer knows are one-of-a-kind originals. Her unique style and unusual techniques ensure that no two pieces are ever the same.
Myléne also conducts resin bangle workshops in her studio on a monthly basis, introducing both beginners and advanced jewellery makers to the world of resin. Her friendly manner soon settles students as they quickly become adept at working with resin so that come the end of a workshop they are equipped with the skills required to continue casting on their own.
Myléne continues experimenting with resin, creating different colour and surface treatments. Never one to follow the crowd, her aim is to continually develop unique techniques that allow her to create original, distinctive designs.
Teaching Style
Myléne first began teaching mixed media six years ago, with resin workshops being a more recent addition in the last two years. She is a patient and dedicated teacher whose philosophy is that there are no mistakes – only opportunities for new discoveries. With her relaxed teaching style Myléne will gently guide you through the mysterious process of casting with resin.
Myléne offers small private resin workshops where each technique is demonstrated and explained thoroughly first. Classes are structured so that students not only learn from observing the demonstrations but also from observing other students. Individual attention is then able to be given to each student, ensuring that they master the techniques and understand safety requirements. This approach reinforces the skills learned and allows for continued, successful resin casting at home. |
